Shaggy Maggot The way of life may be gone, but thankfully the music can endure. Even without the dancers this is wonderful. If "music is history you can dance to" this certainly fits the bill.

So envious of the collectors (seems like a time-travel equivalent of seeing Coro delle Mondine di Novi or Ayarkhaan). Favorite track: BA702 East Serbia: Negotinka.

about

The Balkan Arts Series is a 13-part series featuring some of the most exciting field recordings of traditional folk music yet to emerge from Bulgaria, East Serbia, Greek Macedonia and Thrace, and Romania. Recorded in the 1960′s and 70′s and never before available to the general public, these remarkable recordings document and celebrate a culture and a way of village life that has since been lost forever—transformed by the social and economic pressures of industrial technology, Soviet influence, and Western globalization.

Most of the series was either recorded or curated by Martin Koenig, an esteemed ethnographer who also produced three recordings for Nonesuch’s celebrated Explorer Series, and who (in collaboration with Ethel Raim) recorded “Izlel e Delyu Haidutun,” the now-famous Bulgarian recording featured on the Voyager Spacecraft’s golden record.

Available as state-of-the-art restored digital EPs or as collectible “new-old stock” 7-inch records, the Balkan Arts Series features powerful and authentic performances by local master musicians. All EPs purchased on Bandcamp include breathtaking photographs, detailed audio commentary and liner notes, as well as a beautiful digital booklet.
